Plant of the Week: Hydrangea

One shrub that always stands out is Hydrangeas. With their pom pom flowers that may change color depending on the soil they are planted in, these are one of the most common shrubs for foundation plantings.

There are many different types of hydrangeas that are suitable for different habitats, so make sure the one you choose will thrive in the location you have available. The five main categories are Bigleaf Hydrangeas, Panicle Hydrangeas, Oakleaf Hydrangeas, Smooth Hydrangeas and Climbing Hydrangeas, with several species within each category.

How to care for Hydrangeas:

Hydrangeas are notorious for their need for water. In fact their name is a Greek word for water vessel. They like to be in partial shade to full sun.

Here are some pruning tips:

Hydrangeas don’t need to be fully pruned each year. However, every year they should have the dead stems removed. You can also remove any dead blooms in order to keep a neat appearance.
