Plant of the Week: Hostas

Hostas are one of the most loved perennial plants around. If you’re looking for a perennial to plant in a shady area, Hostas can be a great choice. Just make sure you pay attention to the color of the leaves. The darker and more blue the leaves, the better it will be in the shade.

There are over 2,500 different species of Hostas so there are many different options to choose from! One benefit of hostas is its low need for maintenance. With only a few things that affect Hostas, they are a staple to creating a lasting garden.

How to care for Hostas:

Hostas vary in their sunlight needs depending on variety. These plants like rich organic soil with a slightly acidic pH level, and good drainage.

Can I use Hostas as an animal deterrent?:

While deer find Hostas tasty, you can plant other plants nearby to deter them. Another animal that likes Hostas is slugs. These can be deterred by sprinkling sand around your Hosta when planting it. Be careful with your pets such as dogs, cats, and horses as Hostas can make them sick if ingested.
