Plant of the Week: Forsythia

This early blooming shrub is one of the most eye-catching during the springtime. Forsythia is commonly used as hedges and the bright yellow blooms are vibrant. These low maintenance shrubs are perfect for those who want a pop of color early in the season.

Like other early blooming shrubs, Forsythia is a pollinator’s dream. With the abundance of blooms this is a great choice for a pollinator garden. This shrub can also be used as a form of erosion control along woodlands.

How to care for Forsythia:

Forsythia likes full sun and can tolerate part shade, in loose well drained soil that is acidic to slightly alkaline pH level.

Here are some pruning tips:

While these are low maintenance shrubs that are fast growing, pruning isn’t necessary. However if you are looking for a neater look, you can prune just after blooming in the spring. You can also selectively cut newer branches to help keep the shape.
